Wayne:
Your advice of tilling in leaves struck a cord. Many Canadians and New
Englanders swear that the best pumpkin food is maple leaf compost. I can
attest that my friend, Vic Thomas in Queensbury, NY who has been growing
200-300 lb. field pumpkins for years on acreage that was once dairy cattle
pasture. He has tilled in maple leaves each fall and has fantastic pumpkins,
large and small. I'm certain there would be a market for composted maple
leaves if someone was clever enough to bag it!
FYI, I have gotten him hooked on AG's this season and have shared some good
seed. He is so psyched about this project, his garden is doubled in size. He
would be a perfect personality for this group, but he doesn't have a computer
(drat!).
I will be watching two gardens this year....the one here in FL, and when that
ends in July, I'll go to Glens Falls in Aug and enjoy Vic's pumpkins until
Oct. What a summer to look forward to!
