will have to till at some point when the vine is a number of feet long.
Is it the rule of thumb that the root system extending from the seed,
early on, is further out then the end of the vine? If my plant is six
feet long and I need to till the rest of the patch how close do I get to
the plant with the tiller?

Zoo,
I have an idea. Rather than use a rototiller near the plant, when you are
getting close switch to a hand fork and go slowly. Watch out for those little
white roots!
