You could be right. Another hypothesis is that plants are oxygen limited -
in partially compacted *and* well fluffed soils. Forced aeration might
help in either case. It isn't a substitute for good soil texture though -
I plan on double digging the patch for exactly that reason.
I still don't know if forced aeration is helpful, or even wise... since I
know very little about root physiology it would be an ad-hoc experiment.
