Dan,
I also tilled my patch by hand this year. I did not double dig,
but
used a fork to get down between 10 inches and a foot, turning
cow manure in as I went. The guys I work with said; "don't
be so
cheap...rent a rototiller". I think that you can do a better job
tilling
by hand.... all rocks are picked....no weeds chopped up.....no
worms chopped up.....and the soil is not pulverized. If I had time
I would definitely double dig, (my patch is 1200 square feet).
I figure for every square foot that I dig by hand, my pumpkin will
grow 1.25 pounds, thus resulting in a 1500 pound pumpkin this year.
Maybe I will go dig a few more fork fulls just to be sure I will break
3/4t.
Actually, I think I will plant 3 AG's in this area and may cull one if it
is
not keeping up with the others. How many plants are you growing this
year?
Good luck,
Dan in Vermont
