How to prune???

I now have my final pumpkin set and it is at 41" circumference and growing like mad! I have a lot of leaves dieing off close to the stem. Is that normal? The vines are still growing fast and the pumpkin also. I have 5 vines besides the one my pumpkin is on and am curious if I should let them continue or prune them off. They are all 16 to 20 feet long. If I should cut them, how far from the stem should I cut and is there a correct way and wrong way to do it?? Please help!
