Re: More PGPGA woes.

Scott,

Sorry to hear of you joining the seasonal rankings of stem splits. This year is my 4th with the mallorn list, and I do believe this year's weather has something to do with it, but stem splits are becoming a horrific problem, especially with PGPGA members. A curse? I dont think so, it has to be the excessive rain causing quick growth spurts. The best thing to do for a stem split is to dry it out first and foremost, with a fan of some type, and applying a paste of captan to it to prevent any infections fungi or bacterial infections to get into any fleshy parts of the split. It will look nasty, but it can be held together with some help from you and some prayers to our god above!
As for the soft spot, the worst thing you can do is to just let it get softer and bigger. Your best bet is to scrape out the soft spot, and do the same procedure... Dry it out, and paste it with captan. Continue to monitor the spot, checking for any further softening or wetness, always scraping the spot if necessary. Check with the heavy hitters if you want, but this is the advice you will get from most , if not all of them.
I cant tell you of my situation as of this point, but am hoping all is still together. I do know that it isnt raining only in Pennsylvania this year, as I was in RHode Island yesterday and Long Island today, pouring rain all day yesterday in RHode Island, and all morning here today in NY. The trees here all have tons o moss and fungi growing on the bark out here from the extremely wet conditions they ahve had this season, so I am informing my father-in-law to spray with Daconil to rid himself of some of these problems that are infecting his trees.
Hope this helps you keep those two fruit together..
