orange since it was little, very smooth skinned and is the classical

why - they're
Burpee's "Prizewinner Hybrid"!!! I guess I had assumed since the front of
the pack says " a real giant" that they were the AG's. Oh well, I'm still
tickled with them but now I can't wait until next year to plant the real
thing! Any ideas of what to expect from my Burpee pumpkins - >>

When did you plant, and how big are your fruit right now? Basketball, beach
ball or larger than a bushel basket? Run a tape measure from the stem end,
around the fruit at the widest point around to the blossom end of largest
fruit and back to the stem and post the number in inches. Then, we can tell
you approximately how much your fruit weighs from charts.
Most Prizewinners are dark orange, sometimes reddish like a turban squash at
maturity. They are large pumpkins, from the same family, but rarely get much
above 200 or so in a home garden, unless all pumpkins from the vine are
culled off and the plant is managed with surgical precision.
I know a grower in upstate NY who grows them in a small field, takes care to
water and fertilize them well, and they get to be around 175 lbs. on average.
He does not cull any fruit off the vine, and lets the bees pollinate. That's
still a large pumpkin, and they make great jack o'lanterns and holiday
displays. You certainly can't beat their color.
To be honest, some first time AG growers don't grow 200 pounders their first
time around, so be proud of your fine pumpkins. Sounds like you will make a
great AG grower with such success at Prizewinners!
Good luck next year and if you need seeds, just ask, most of us have plenty
of seeds to share and would be happy to send you some.
