Re: how often to water & other questions

>(yes 300 gallons)

Yep. 300 gallons is *probably* a good start.

Dear hearts, I feel terrible because there are a lot of newbies out there
asking honest newbie questions, and you all aren't getting many good
answers. The reason I feel terrible is that I simply don't have the time to
sit here and respond thoughtfully in the cases where I might have a
contribution or a response to your question.

May I point out, again, the wonderful, the fabulous, the incomparable
Mallorn PUMPKINS archives! This is a wonderful tool for researching almost
any pumpkin question. It's also good for looking up email addresses if you
want to contact a specific person.

Here's one way to access it if you want a specific time period:

http://www.hort.net/lists/pumpkins/aug01/maillist.html

This link gives you the current archives. If you have a real *August* sort
of question, like how-much-water? or how-do-I-nurse-a-stem-split? or
what's-a-good-high-K-fert?, then you can edit the aug01 chunk in the link to
aug00 or aug99 and see what was happening in prior Augusts. If you want to
find an email address of someone who you know posted something about
starting seeds in late April, than change that chunk to apr01 and find the
post.

Perhaps an even better way to research questions is with the archives
search:

http://www.hort.net/lists//pumpkins/search.cgi

Here you choose your search terms, say perhaps " water AND gallons "
(without the quotes), then choose your months and years, say perhaps July
and August and all years, hit it, and get all sorts of good information
about watering. Here is a response on the watering issue most of which I
cut-and-pasted from two excellent past contributions from Marv Hicks and
Greg Schraiber:

A good rule of thumb is that growing pumpkins need an inch of water a week,
but this may vary depending on soil composition, plant size, temperature,
humidity and wind speed.

1 sq ft = 144 sq in
[For] 1 sq ft, 144 cu in water per week [would be]
144 cu in water = .623 gal
100 sq ft needs 62.3 gal per week
400 sq ft needs 249.2 gal per week
1000 sq ft needs 623 gal

Happy hunting!

Beth
