Re: split baby

Great to hear you are growing the 659 Troy that is a neat seed. Let me share
a few observations with you. I have grown the Flag pattern several times and I
always pick the female flowers off the secondaries till I get to the end of
the vine when I terminate it and when I do I try and leave one pumpkin at the
end of each vine. I let them open pollinate and later I will cull them off but
it is funny watching those grow. one will grow fast one will split like pack
man one will split like a puzzle maybe a few will abort so on and so forth.
that is just the way it works. i have also had that on main vines. some pumpkins
just are not internally sound to make it so they just either Abort or split
kind of natures way of letting you know "Mother nature is still in charge."
Most of you may disagree but in the last few days I have spoken with
several growers that are having bad years the same as I am and I have seen several
pumpkins grow strong and steady then just stop growing at 200 or 300 lbs or
split and all I can say is for every Big pumpkin say over 600 lbs that makes it
to the scales 5 to 10 really good plants didn't make it to completion. At
least that is the odds when I take into consideration all the southern
California growers this year and I think it probably holds pretty much true all over.
That is what makes giant pumpkins so elusive... I wish all of you the BEST luck
in the world and Hope you all get several personal bests this year !!!
For me I think every person only has so many prayers in them every
year and God answered ALL my prayers with the addition of my Beautiful Son ...
so I cannot complain that I don't have the best pumpkins I have ever grown. I
figure I can have several bad years to catch up with the blessing I hold in my
hands right now! Take care !!
