I guess I am going to have to learn how the bees pollinate pumpkins as I
have had a difficult time getting the females started. I assume some of
the problem has been associated with the hot and muggy weather that we
have had (low 90s during the day and lows 70s at night) plus all the rain we
have had (fourth highest total amount during July). There was a lot of mold in
the pumpkin patch. This past week it has dried out and a number of pumpkins
are taking hold.
So far, my best is 217.5 inches (circumference = 95 inches -- almost
100). This pumpkin is from seed made from a cross of Don Black's, 1993 884
pounder and Joel Holland's, 1992 722 pounder.
I have three other pumpkins doing well. The are from:

- Schlutt 690 -- 178 inches
- Baird 652 -- 182 inches
- Baird 603 -- 184.5 inches

The inches represent the three measurements used in determining and
estimate of the pumpkin's weight. I have placed a sun screen over the top
of three of the pumpkins ( 6'x8' tarp attached to steel posts).

My other eight plants are just getting started - softball size.
