Peter,
I can't be of help but perhaps I can commiserate. I have been seeing a
similar thing for weeks now. New leaves grow out limp and stunted, and are
covered with yellow splotches; or, they are a lighter green with yellow
rings. I have tried more and less water, Sevin (although no pests appear to
be present), fungicide, more and less fertilizing (I don't fertilize much, as
a rule, but have never seen this before), covering the entire plant with 60%
shade-cloth, un-shading only parts of the plant, etc. Nothing seems to have
an effect and I am, as usual, completely at a loss.
By the way the weather here in Orange County, CA has alternated from very hot
and sunny to moderately warm. It is completely dry here, being a desert.
The older leaves on the plant (it's a Bobier) have always been, and remain,
healthy. Just the new growth leaves are weak, droopy, discolored and
stunted. It seems to me (a novice) that either the plant has some kind of
disease (virus, etc), or it's missing something in its diet. Exposure to
strong sun of the new sick growth will result in parts of the leaves turning
leathery, drying and dying. I have set a fruit on the plant, and it is
volleyball sized but growing slowly. The plant is all I have (small backyard
plot) so I can't give up on it. I will be listening carefully to what the
group has to say.
Sometimes I think I should simply go on vacation for a month and leave it
alone. When I come back it would probably be fine again (i.e., it's all my
"attentions" that have and continue to cause the problems).
