Dead vines?

My pumpkin vines are very dead from the base of the vine up until the
pumpkin. Starting about 2 feet away from the pumpkin...it becomes green
again. My question is: Is water getting to my pumpkin? The vines seems so
DEAD and dried up for like 5-6 feet and then look alive by the pumpkin.
