Problem with Crack - Medicine Hat

Rocky,

Yes, stem splits, cracks, explosions and various other problems such as this
can result from a combination of too much water, too much heat, too much
fertilizer. However, these problems can also be genetic traits of the seeds
genetic ancestry . Take for example sag lines, formerly called Dill Rings.
These are clearly evident year after year in certain pumpkins, yet in other
pedigree seed lines they do not occur very often. Therefor it is hard to
weed out whether the stem split, crack in a rib, brittle vines etc. was the
result of the growers over applications of water, fertilization. etc., while
the weather was too hot, or if it was the result of a genetic trait inbred
into the pedigree seed line. Tough question to answer but I hope this makes
sense!
