Re: Upper limits of growth
Beth,
I have had long talks with the growers in the North West about this
topic. They like to see 3" to 4" a day. For us in the Ca. sun we get 5
inches a day on average when the pumpkin is under 100" Cir. Once the
pumpkin gets over 100 inches slow and steady is what you want. 3" or
less. I have seen pumpkins growing at 7" a day but they never made it to
the scale. For reference at the 14 day mark my pumpkins were 45.5",
41.5", and 47". These pumpkins are 18 days old now and the smallest of
the three is 63". At this point I am so close to blowing up I cringe
every time I get home from work and walk into the patch. On one plant I
have lost everything due to blow out except for one pumpkin and that is
on a s. main. My main is terminated and no hope of setting anything else.
I guess you could say all our eggs are in one plant. Good luck and go for
the big inches but be cautious.
