I do not have a watering system, so I do not think watering the stump area
caused the problem. Actually, the plants which have this problem have
received very little water from buckets. BUT, early in the growing season,
a lot of rain was received. The pumpkins which have the problem got wet
feet as water stood for a short while around the area of the stump. That
also might explain why one of my pumpkin plants rotted off just under the
soil as it was in the wet area. By the way, that plant is still alive and
really growing. Several pumpkins have started, but they are still small at
this time.
