Gene:
Thanks for all the SVB research! I'll stow that away for next year.
I'm a first year AG pumpkin grower up in Massachusetts. We've had good
weather up here except for the complete lack of any precipitation. I have
been amazed with the vigor of this plant. I have a vine going that covers
about 500 sq. feet. I've got three pumpkins on the vine (biggest 55-42-42,
averaging 3"/day for during its 18 day existance) and except for insatiable
thirst, my vine WAS very trouble free. And this was totally organic, no
chemicals at all. Then I had to go and get married out of state and take a
honeymoon in Seattle. The vine had to go about 2 weeks with just the
neighbor kid stopping by to water it.
The vine paid for my absence. I returned home a few days back to find
quite a few VBs had set up shop on various vines. The worst of it was that
2 went straight into the stump of the plant. About 3 inches from the root I
had to pull out these little beasts. I did a pretty clean job removing
them, but still... and who knows there might be more.
Anyhow, the plant seems stable after all that. I do think it is a
pretty hardy vine. Between this and my slightly late start I don't think it
will be one for the record books, but I am determined to keep this thing
alive.
In regards to that Thunderstorm Brett - Ouch... that is pretty nasty luck.
But if I ever write a Top 10 list of ways to know that you are a pumpkin
growing addict, your story will be way up there.
So about what time of year do people start acquiring seeds for next year?
Now that I am totally hooked on this plant I want to grow something other
than the historyless seeds I bought from JohnneySeeds this year. (Hey, you
have to start somewhere right?)
Good luck & good weather to you all --Dan
