Re: patch size

Randy.

In my opinion the best size for a plant would be around 900 - 1200 square
feet. if you have it. My biggest plant this year is about 60 by 40 feet but
it is not producing the biggest pumpkin. You can grow a big one in smaller
plots, but most plants will easily fill a 30 foot square by the time you
should be terminating vines anyway.
It is nice to have the room that you can grow your plant in the Christmas
tree shape, thereby letting you get down between every secondary for
weeding, inspection or whatever.

As far as killing your lawn, some people just scoop off the sod and amend
what is underneath, but I like to spray new plots with Roundup when they are
actively growing. I usually use it a bit heavier then recommended and I find
that it will get everything alive at the time killed right down to the root
(as they say on the commercial). Then if you can get it done flip the sod
upside down in the fall after everything turns yellow and is dead, otherwise
you will be picking sod balls in the spring.
