rotted vines

Help!!  My pumpkins are not doing so well this year!!  I have noticed
that a lot of the plants have "rotten " spots on the vine,  right where
the vine comes out of the ground!  I am suspecting that there is some
kind of worm that has bore a hole into the vine!  The vine is all
crmbling in spots like something has been eating it!  It has attacked
several of my vines!!    What can I do to prevent this from happening
next year??  I am presumming there is nothing thatcan be done now,
correct??
