From my experience with newsgroups, I would suggest the following:
1. Don't worry about personal messages. They add flavour to the group
and help promote commeraderie and a generous spirit. Messages directed
at a specific person, however, should be emailed directly.
2. A FAQ file could be maintained to answer those newbie questions.
Some growers here have extensive websites, perhaps one would volunteer
to track the most frequently asked questions and newbies could be
directed there.
3. When responding to a frequently asked questions, email directly
rather than going through the group.
Personally, I don't belong to the email list; I access through the
archives only. I find that this allows me to easily pick and choose the
topics I want without overloading my email system. I have never liked
email groups because of the huge influx of email and the only reason I
am here is that I can access the archives. I think this is why
newsgroups have an advantage over email lists.
