Ok, my 2 cents...
The problem with many special-interest lists is the finite nature of the
subject. Technically, there are only so many factors involved in growing a
pumpkin: soil preparation; seed choice; germination; transplantation;
fertilization; pest control; pollination; termination and burying of vines;
results measurement. Once these areas have been addressed (and they have
been several times over), there's very little more technique that can be
taught.
With so many people spread over such a large geographic area, many pumpkins
are at different stages of growth at the same time. People ask questions as
their situations develop -- hence the redundancy. Searching the archives and
participating in the Pumpkin Chat can alleviate that. Patience,
understanding and a delete key are needed for those who don't want to
re-read things.
As for appropriate content, I mostly agree with Dr. Eddleman. However, I
prefer to see some (not all -- very little, actually) of an original post
referenced in a reply. Seeing "Yes" as an answer to an unknown question is
maddening. Clip away the extraneous stuff from the original, quote the
question, and provide an answer. Always remove the "unsubscribe" information
at the bottom of the original -- it will be repeated on your reply. I belong
to this list at work and at home -- so cutting down on the "no content
messages" would be nice.
This list is the best behaved of any I have ever joined. Sniping and flaming
serves no purpose and there is little of it on this list (I unsubscribed
from a Boy Scout list because of the intense flaming). Duncan is doing a
great job.
The list is a place to share both technical and personal information. I have
met some nice folks here and picked up a new hobby because of this list. I
want it to continue.
