I had the same problem with several of my plants this year. I do not have
an overhead watering system, just five gallon buckets. My problem started
after several heavy rains which left water standing around the stump of the
plant for a short while. The drainage is fairly good, but it remained
wet around the base of the plant. The plants which were planted just a
little higher did not have this oozing and rotting problem.
