For years contractors have used bales of straw to insulate the ground
where they want to dig in freezing weather...keeps the natural ground
heat in.  In order to keep a compost heap percolating you have to get it
cooking at a minimal temperature. Otherwise, it will just sit there.  Now
here's a case where the combination of heat tapes and compost heap might
make a good combination...the heat tapes are thermostatically controlled
to 75 degrees F and then when the sun comes out...the clear plastic will
keep the heat inside and cooking.  Just throw in a heat exchanger and you
can heat your house!   Incidently, I saw a pile of wood chips about 12
feet tall the other day and it was absolutely steaming off the top. 
Anyone for spontaneous combustion?
