Re: coloring

Group:

Dark bluish green leaves is also a sign of over fert. It's a hard color to
describe, but when you see it, you will recognize it. Backing off on the fert
usually solves the prob.

A funny story. During the 4-H garden project, a competitive parent decided
that the more fert they used on their son's month old plant, the faster his
plant would grow and vine. They poured a 40 lb. bag of 10-10-10 granular fert
around the plant like so much sugar, and then watered heavily. The granular
fert was about 3-4 inches thick on top of the soil.

I was not present at the time of the deed, but discovered the misapplication
the following day. Even though I immediately removed the visible signs of the
fert, the plant was lost. There is nothing sadder than to see the effects of
fertilizer burn on a pumpkin plant (intractable wilting and browning) and
know that nothing can be done to reverse it.

Those who are skilled or lucky enough to meter their fert and nutrients
throughout the growing season to achieve desired balance and optimum growth
deserve a big hand.
