Main Root

Hi, What would happen if when you started to build your plant site, ( 3' below your plant ) you placed an upside-down lid, like a garbage can lid or something 3 to 4' wide that could be filled with your favorite compost, fish emulsion,  fertilizer, etc.. The lid could catch much needed  water and nutrients that leach down. Would the plant abort when the main root hit the lid, or would it sop up the goodies like a biscuit after gravy?    John in Prosser, Wa.
