Just some thoughts about soaker hoses:
I have used soaker hoses in my patches in the past, but my limitation was
that I could only do so on a limited area b/c the vines would trail out onto
my lawn. I was never really sorry that I couldn't drip irrigate the entire
vine however since I didn't have to worry about irrigating underneath the
fruit after it set. I guess if you had a grid throughout your entire patch
it would become quite important to place some protection beneath the pumpkin
to keep its "bottom" dry. I always worried about reusing the soaker hoses
for fear of harboring soil fungi from the previous season, but I guess one
could soak them in a bleach solution to sterilize. I did have some problems
with blow-outs of the hoses too, and mice seemed to enjoy chewing on them
too.

I experimented with drip irrigation systems for several years on AG's in the
80's. I found it caused shallow rooting. I would like to try a grid system
of soaker hoses instead, that would deep soak the entire patch. Hope to try
that this year or next.
