Re: 2 per family?

Our weigh off is the last weekend of September, so growers of the really large pumpkins can take their pumpkin to Iowa or Wisconsin the first weekend in October. Over the past several years, we have lost a couple of those large pumpkins to other weigh off sites since our first prize was not that large; however, even if we did NOT award prizes to most all pumpkin entries, the first place prize would still be much below those given at the other weigh off sites in Iowa or Wisconsin. Thus, we would still lose them to the other weigh off sites.

Curious: Does this not have the tendency to drive the larger pumpkins to another weigh off ?

To have a competitive sport there has to be success & failure. First & last. Other wise why
have a competition at all.  The view from here.

PS: I've been & expect to be again at both end's of this spectrum , but's that's what makes it a competition.

That is the way we do it at the Austin, Minnesota weigh off. Most all of the pumpkin growers receive a prize, no matter how small the pumpkin. This leaves less dollars for the first three places as you mentioned. To help encourage more growers to enter the competition, the dollar prize for 15th place is much higher and is about the same as the 3rd or 4th place finisher. This adds a little more excitement to the weigh off.

Okay, I'll stick in my two cents worth,
We are going with two entries per family membership with the grower being the one who has to live with whether or not they actually grew the pumpkin.  The key point is this, with club money, we are going to get something for everyone.  If that is money, sponser products or whatever.  We are having many other classes, like beauty and the beast, best of show (most orange and round and big), mystery weight, ect.  This is to spread the wealth.  It may mean a lesser prize for first, but the last place grower doesn't get discouraged and hence, the sport grows as that last place guy or girl goes home with a prize and wants to grow next year.
