Sapsuckers

I know this isn't pumpkin related but I thought some of you might have
had a similiar problem.

We have a pecan tree that has recently become riddled with hundreds of
holes, the work of a sapsucker. I don't want to kill this beautiful bird
but I fear for the well being of the tree. The damage that bird has done
is truly alarming!

Does anyone know of a way to deter such birds?
