Polly:
Lots of people use tractors with forks to hoist a pumpkin from the field. They
most always roll or slide the fruit onto a pallet or other sturdy platform to
protect it from damage before picking it up with the forks.
I've also seen growers use a wide leather strap with handles on both ends to
harvest a 200 lb pumpkin.
The tarps that Ken was talking about are not tarps at all, but very clever and
effective slings made to be used with a block and tackle. Lift trucks are
often fitted with them to weigh the bigger pumpkins at weigh-off sites. They
are adjustable and fit over the pumpkin no matter what size or shape, allowing
it to be lifted for final inspection by the judges and then onto the scale.
This saves the lifting crew from hours of backbreaking labor, and keeps things
going.

Has anybody ever used a forklift? Or will this damage the pumpkin?
