RE: Hailstorms

I agree with George, quantity of stones can cause more damage than a handful
of larger stones. Although hail is not too common around here it does happen
and seems to be happening more frequent then in the past? last damaging hail
I had was in August of 98, did a lot of damage Swiss cheese leaves and
dimpled pumpkins but it did not end the season. You could try using bird
netting over your plants to absorb the force of the following stones, it
should hold up against the wind better than row cover or plastic.

I shuddered each and every time Glenn Peters and George Brooks commented
on

the approaching hailstorm last summer and the previous summer which leads
to
this question.I one was to utilize a temporary roll-over cover to protect
against a possibility of season ending hail, what size should the mesh be?
What i mean is....does 1/8inch hail end a season? How bout 1/4 inch
size?What
sized mesh should I use? I can get away with a little sun shading here on
Long island and I'd like to kill two birds with one stone....shade and
 hail.....any comments?....G

More than the size I think the amount is a big factor too. 1/4" hail 1"
apart
would probably end a season. 5/8 Hail breaks vines off. I saw an article
about a garden in the Red River Valley of Texas that was grown under a hail
stone screen of 1/4" hardware cloth, which is 1/4 galvanized wire. Even if
the get through most would hit the wire then just drop through.
