Re: Newbie with a question

Karen,
I have to say that I was very surprised to see myself mentioned by name
on this list
since I am mostly a reader, not a contributor. (Thank you Kathie for the
kind words).
I do live in Fresno, where the summer time temps reach 110 plus. I have grown
many
Hybrid Prizewinners and Big Maxes. I have also grown Early Sugar and
Jack-O-Lantern.
All of these have been store bought seeds and done what I wanted. Last year
was my
first attempt at AG's, I bought the seeds from a catalog and did not find
this site until I was almost through growing it, sometime in September. It
was a sharp learning curve for me.
To address your concern about heat, I haven't grown a pumpkin of any sort
that didn't wilt during the day. I have tried varying the time of day I
water and the amount, and I have also tried shading the plant during midday
sun, and nothing helps. I always seem to have pumpkins in October so I don't
know how much better I would do if I discovered a way to keep them from
wilting.
Not to commit heresy, but if you would like, the catalog I got my seeds
from last year is Gurney's. Their web site is mySeasons.com. The 800 number
is 1-800-824-6400. This year I am priveledged to attempt growing seeds from
Mr. Chris Wilbers, who
very kindly shared with me. We'll see how I do.
    Good Luck
