Re: Seed auctions

Like Debra, I am somewhat ambivalent here. Without the good-hearted growers
like Brett and Shellie and Kirk and Matt and ... oh all of you! ... I
wouldn't be in the sport in the first place. And the prices the auction
seeds hit are way too rich for my blood.
But I don't object to the associations raising money through the auctions.
Contrary to what someone mentioned earlier, these auctions DO help the
majority... think about how much you pay in membership fees. And when was
the last time you paid an entrance fee at a weighoff? Take the PGPGA, for
example. The membership is still $15, and there is no entrance fee at the
Altoona weighoff. Part of the reason is they raised a lot of money last
year in the seed auction.
I've done (or tried to do) serious fund-raising for good causes, and it's
very difficult. Corporate sponsorship is also a constant struggle to get
and keep.
Another thing to think about is longer range effects of the auctions. Will
these numbers make Howard and Ray think they can jack up their prices? I'm
not sure, but I think if they tried, their market would dwindle or
disappear.
