Hello,
All my pumpkins last summer weighed over the estimates. I don't have the
reason figured out myself, but here are the facts. My 1096.8 was creamy
colored and 17% over, the 652 was a nice dark orange color and 10% over and
the 805 was a lighter Salmon color and 7% over. They were grown from
different seeds with different genetics, but were in the same 30'x90' garden.
I had my soil tested at the end of the growing season and nothing in the
report jumped out at me. My Potassium came back medium. My Magnesium and
Calcium were high and my Sulfur and Iron levels were very high. My organic
matter percentage was a little over 8% at the beginning of the growing season
and ended up 6.7%. As you all know, the NE weather last summer was very cool,
but we had lots of sunshine. In my particular case, I'm guessing the weather
played the biggest part for my pumpkins being heavy to the chart, but I am
not ready to rule out genetics or soil conditions....
