 Vicki,
You are correct that foliar feeding is not an efficient way of feeding
your plant. I'm not saying that it doesn't work at all, but 90% of the
material is washed off and taken up by the roots. I talked to a technical
expert from Peters about this and they conducted experiments with foliar
feeding. First they foliar fed plants in pots and saw a good response. Next
they took a group of the same plants and covered the soil in the pot so
nothing could run off the plant and in to the pot. They found that the
covered pots which did not allow fertilizer runoff had little response to
foliar feeds. The Urea form of nitrogen will give you some response with
foliar feeding. Now, after that, do I foliar feed?..... Yes! It is a great
way to put on fertilizer. Water a leaf and watch what happens to the
water....it collects on the leaf, runs down the stem and right into the tap
root......what an easy way to fertilize every one of your tap roots without
having to tramp around in your patch. Foliar feeding? The best thing since
sliced bread, but most of it doesn't enter the plant through the leaf. There
is an experiment you could conduct until planting time comes!

I use some foliar feeding too but I put it on with a mist blower that puts
out a micro fine droplet. It has better coverage and seems to be taken up
better.
