RE: Burying Vines


Joe, 

The burying is not to protect them from vine borers but rather to
encourage rooting. The way I understand it, this is essential to growing
a really big 'un. I have heard that a properly buried vine will root
both at the bottom and the top at the leaf nodes. 

I suppose it would indeed help in the fight against borers as well. I
don't think the female will tunnel through dirt to get to a vine. I
think most borer infestations occur mostly at close proximity to the
main root - within a few feet of the original planting site. I would
definitely pay extra attention to this area.
