Tony,
Let the side vines get a start first. keep about the last three feet of
the vine unburied and slowly cover a little bit at a time.....
The older leaves dying off is normal. You shouldn't have to shade the
vines if your burying them. If your concerend about the stump getting too
much sun, put a small shade cloth over it but not touching it. Three
months old is not exactly young...
Thin some of those overcrowded leaves out.......
