Jeremy,
The general rule of thumb is about 1000 sq. ft. per entire plant. Lots of grower
grow in less than that and have good success.
The vines are generally covered where they start touching the ground from where
the seed is planted, but wait until they get long enough to grow side vines and
blossoms. (about 5 to 8' or so). Then go back and bury all but about the last 3'
to 5' of vine. As it continues to grow, keep burying all but the last 3' to 5'.
Use moist soil and it will activate dormant root nodules on the top and bottom of
the vines. The additional roots will help nutrient uptake and stabilize the vine
from blowing over and getting twisted in the wind.
You can bury the vine before and after where the pumpkin is growing. Just don't
bury or allow vine roots to take hold within at least 5' of each side of the
pumpkin. It will cause the vine to break off the pumpkin as the pumpkin grows. You
need a good amount of vine slack on both sides of the pumpkin. Do not allow any
tension on the vine near the pumpkin.
Good Luck.
