AG's and mulch

Hi all.
 
 I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has tried using hay/straw mulch on their plants.
I have a abundant supply of old hay and a bale chopper and was considering experimenting on a few plants. Hay may be cleaner than straw as far as weed seeds go. The only drawback that I an think of is the possibility of mice or other critter problems. We have a surplus of cats around the farm so that should not really be a factor. Mulching should save considerable water but may keep the soil too cool?
Any thoughts from other mulchers?
