Dont think him squezing through was the only way he got in, I have watched them climb vertically over my wire fence like yours 3 ft straight up and over, you need to curve the top back kind of like a squirl baffle to prvent this. also if you have an extra trap and know you have climbers put one trap in the patch, better to go for it then your pumpkin.
