Happy Independence Day !!!
Here is the Torrance report. After having warm weather in the high 70's my
plants have sprung into action and look pretty good. Today we are getting a
freak drizzle and I am kind of happy to see the free irrigation fall from
those dark puffy things that occasionally block the sun here in Sunny
Southern California, You know it NEVER rains here... HA HA
Mound # 1 This is home to the 986 Hester Squash (900.8 Lyons Sibbed) . At
about 13 feet long the main vine is a beautiful yellow and even though the
leaves are few (62 to be exact) the plant is coming along quite nicely now.
At about 12 1/2 feet the only female sits waiting to swell up and be
fertilized. It is a beautiful YELLOW and is for sure a pumpkin or squmpkin.
The plant is slow for sure but I am burying the vines and I hope since I am
fertilizing so heavy with phosphorous and kelp It is making roots over leaf
at this point.
Mound # 2 This is home to my 791 Glasier (567.5 Mombert self and sibbed)
At 17 feet it is growing slow and sure. As with the 986 every secondary is
carefully positioned and buried. I never thought I could control the growth
of an AG but they are beautiful in the Christmas tree shape. My wife
pollinated my first pumpkin at 10 1/2 feet on the main with Bob Troys 723
Bobier. What the 791 is lacking in vigor and leaf size the 723 makes up for.
Hopefully a good cross.. It has Females at almost every leaf margin and is a
great plant.
Hole # 3 This is home to the 547 Kournikakis (935 Lloyd selfed) OK how many
times do I have to say I wish I put this one in mound # 1. Incredible plant
robust thick leaves fat runners WOW what a plant. Yes, I will set a pumpkin
hopefully with Bob Troys 549 (more on that later) this is a great plant from
such a small seed emerged a giant !!
Outer patch plants put in the parimiter of my patch are the 642 Glasier,
three 247 Smith, and a 705 Mettler. The 642 Went flat vine from the start
then cured its self at two feet. Huge trunk three times larger than any other
in my patch and large dark leaves with heavy vines, I just wanted to see it
grow if I decide to set fruit on it I will have to drastically reduce garden
space for the 791 and I don't think that will happen.
The 247 Smith are growing pretty good with no special treatment and hardly
any water. I set a pumpkin on one of them with Bob Troys 940 Mombert 2000 but
will probably cull the whole plant in a couple of weeks as it is in the 986
patch.
The 705 Mettler is just for fun started on May 18 Th. or so it now has four
leaves of which two are so yellow they make cars slow down. I will cull it
today.
Well, here are my observations Bob troy is growing two 549 Troys, one has
stems that are really long something like six to eight inches they look like
crook neck yellows, Great genetics and if the long stems continue in the
offspring this will be a great cross.
My vines are buried DEEP trenched between 4 and 8 inches into the soil then
three inches of amendments added on top. Makes a short plant with no
turtiaries and very very few male flowers, Lucky I have Bob so close !!!
Well, I am rambling on and have to go!! Good LUCK all GROW EM BIG ...
