RE: regarding mail list-how many years?

Hello all, can you stand a couple questions?

I am new to the list, and new to attempting to grow giant pumpkins. I
have yet to read a book, and all of what I think I know has come from
the internet. I bought my seeds at a local drug store (don't laugh at
me ...lol), started them from seed outside in April and currently have 3
plants with volleyball sized pumpkins on them and six others with
baseball sized fruit. I let them self pollinate, I didn't test my soil
and I overhead water them too much....

After reading many posts since I joined the list, I have come up with
some questions that I need answers to in order to understand some of
your posts. Here goes:

1. I have seen many of you make reference to plants by name and weight,
and was wondering if these were commonly known varieties of what? An
example comes from the post I am replying to: "723 Bobier," "Eaton
780," and some others: "758 Smith," "900 Lyons."

2. What is meant by "set" the fruit?

3. It has been between 102 and 107 degrees here in Applegate, OR. What
is the best thing to use and should I cover the fruit? The plants are
fine as they get plenty of water.

4. How long will they grow? I can't seem to get an answer here, I have
read 130 days. Does that mean from germination or from the time there
is fruit?

5. What books, seeds or other resources would any of you recommend so
that I do this right next year?

Thanks all for any response, I appreciate it. I am getting excited
about doing this!

Thanks,

Dale

I have been since Dan Gardner ran the list, and still enjoy the list,
even through the chest thumping and belly aching. Most of everything I
have learned about Giant Pumpkins have come from this list, Don
Langevin's "How to Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins (I and II), fellow
members I have met from this list, and the local yocals such as Mark
Elsbree, Kevin Brown, Len Knauss, and others.
There used to be an address (maybe there still is) that gave the
entire
list of people who belonged to the list, and all you had to do is send
an email with the word list or members in the subject line. It had the
names of people on it, starting with the oldest members, and listing
them down the line, in order as they joined. Anyone remember that
address?

Quick update here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the hail damage
is a
thing of the past, my 723 Bobier is going great, and have one fruit set
on it that is nearing 200 pounds... Just kidding, it actually is the
size of a baseball, pollinated it on July 7th. The Eaton 780 is just
behind the 723 in size, set a fruit on the 6th of July, and that is
about the same size. Other 2 plants in the second patch got hit harder,
and are living, but are not going to do anything but give me a few
pumpkins about 150-200 pounds..

Visited a fellow grower's patch this past weekend, and he has
some nice
looking plants, but is also behind due to some trials and tribulations
of this darn hobby/sport. He has softball sized fruit on a few plants,
and is doing a nice job of playing catch up.

You might be a Redneck if...

You go to the stock car races and don't need a program.
