Look at those roots closely,This was a symptom I had a few years ago and found that it was from too much water,my soil was so organic that I failed to dig down into the soil and check the moisture levels where the soil was retaining a lot of water and was causing this problem.Your symtoms sound like what I was dealing with,My leaves would wilt in the day and come up at night and the leaves would start at one end turning a   brasshish color and the die off continuing this out the vine till it would overcome the whole plant.
I water once a week if it needs it.
