Are you burying the vines?

I planted three giants- One has real big leaves but small fruit, the second

third has a huge fruit, many vines but all the leaves are so small as
compared to the first. Now the first was fertilized with a lot of pond scum
and veggies from the kitchen table, the one with huge leaves. The one with
big fruit but small leaves, thank goodness there are a lot of them, was just
compost with the shredded paper and chicken manure mixed with the dirt I dug
out of the hole I put back in. Will the small leaves be a problem in
catching enough of the sunlight for energy? I do fertilize the one with big
fruit with the Fish Emulsion. I have noticed the vegetative growth has
slowed tremendously and I am concerned it is too early to stop vegetative
growth but I dont know how to encourage it. I worry the sunlight will hurt
the fruit- harden it- I need more leaves- what promotes vegetative growth.
