Sorry. Just read my post and I think it was harsher than I meant. I don't want to start a City vs Country dweller issue. As an animal lover the situation frustrates me. Just was trying to ask that folks not just shift their animal problem to a "neighbor." Again, sorry for my harshness.

I refrained to go into what happens with stray dogs and cats around here. I
have nothing personal against "city folk" per say. They are just in too much
of a hurry. We are simply trying to carve out a living and make a profit.
Cattle prices are in the dumper, fertilizer costs are way up. Energy prices
have direct effects on our business. Then you have the weather, insects, the
US Government and taxes. Point is, I'll be damned if I am going to let a
stray run my calves into the barbed wire or let a coon lodge my corn.
Thank the Lord I am not depending on my AGs for a profit because the last
few years I suck at it.

As another country dweller, I'm tired of "city" folks dumping their problems
in our neighborhoods. Every spring our roads are over run with dogs (many
hit by cars) because of city folks driving to the country and dumping their
problem in our back yards. Please deal with your problem yourself and not
just dump it in someone else's lap.

That is what the live traps are called "Have a Heart". We live on a farm so
the attitudes toward animals and wildlife differ from those in the suburbs
and city. Truth is raccoons and possums are overpopulated due to the fact
that the fur industry is dead. They spread disease, decimate pheasant, quail
and duck nests. They get into my hens, garden and are generally a pain in
the %$@$. If you were talking about the Last Buffalo I'd see your point. I
don't trap anymore unless I have an issue with a problem animal. Next time I
do, I will call you and you can come pick them up and transport them to
another farm 10 miles away. At that point, the farmer there will promptly
shoot the thing for us.

Come on guys. Have a heart and let them go. You take them far enough away,
they won't be back. They're just trying to live, too. Thanks.

Both Steves: You're both right on all counts. There are also laws
regarding the proper disposal of animal carcasses after the old badda-bing.
Hints for the lawless: use sub-sonic .22 cartridges; carcasses decompose
under a large pile of compost in 2 months. Steve Minor.

Catch & release is often illegal but if you do, make sure raccoons are 10
miles or more from home or they'll return.
Our local "legal" animal trapper charges just as much to collect an animal
as he does to trap the beasts. Good work if you can get it.

A can of tuna is a sure thing for coons and possum in a live trap. After
they are caught, let the air out of them with a 22. If you let them go, they
will return.

Rich, all I can say about raccoons and possums here in South Hero, Vermont
is: I hate them. I've found the best method of control is to bait a large
live trap with sunflower seeds, apples or whatever and then dispose of them
after they're caught. Traps cost around $75 and last forever. I don't know
anything about treating teeth marks. Steve.

Hi Folks,
Starting to get some good growth. I have some beach ball size ones too. I
think I have a couple of Raccoon/ oppossum teeth marks in one. Seems like I
should wax it up? Any good hints for keeping out scavenging animals??
I'm just getting past some SVB damage although 3-4 vines look like they are
going to die-> yellow. I might have to spray again for good measure.
What's the picnic in RI???

Had some nice ones, just didn't get the growth. Maybe 500-600lb. Hope to be
in RI for the Picnic. Are you growing?
