Re: roots

Hi, Debbie,

What we do is lay down a layer of sand and level it out. Over the top of the sand we lay a layer of weed cloth. Over that we lay more sand.

We have had many problems with our pumpkins, but we have never had mice burrow into them. Also, in moving the pumpkin away from the vine, it's nice to have that sand to sculpture a wee basin or pedestal if needed.

So would the roots even grow in clay? I have not tilled the yard obviously, so there is approx. 6 to 8" topsoil over clay. I guess I am still confused about the watering issue - mainly near the stump and/or along the vines. I am also confused as to when to terminate the main after pollinating. The pumpkin is about the size of a softball and the main is about 8' feet beyond it. Since I am not growing in a 'patch', but rather over grass, when should I terminate the main? Obviously I could let it go across the whole yard but that would not
work.

When and what do you place under the pumpkin? Sand, plywood, foam?

Thanks everyone for your patience!

Debbie

Hey all
Rule is roots will go as deep as the enviroment can handle. How deep the water can consistantly remain moist without sogging or drying out and the roots will go as deep as there is adiquate oxygen without carbon dioxide pushing up the oxygen. So if you have a deep root oxygenation system well drained humus ritch soil and water deep and throughly with time to drain down deep there is really no limit to how deep they can go. If you achieve a good system your plant will be using and feeding off over 500% more soil mass which could really have the power to push a world record or at least a personal best. Hope this helps.

How deep do the roots grow? Do you focus most of your watering at the stump
