Hi, Debbie,
What we do is lay down a layer of sand and level it out. Over the top of the
sand we lay a layer of weed cloth. Over that we lay more sand.
We have had many problems with our pumpkins, but we have never had mice burrow
into them. Also, in moving the pumpkin away from the vine, it's nice to have
that sand to sculpture a wee basin or pedestal if needed.
