RE: Grass around vines

Hi Chris,

As an urban gardener, I have always grown my plants mostly on the
lawn. We mow the lawn as closely as we can, then I usually just trim
some of the long grass by hand for a while, however, this is really a
loosing battle as things really start to grow, so I don't worry about
long grass too much. When I bury my vines, I just dump a big bucket
of dirt right over the vine, grass and all, and within a short time, I
can see that there are new roots in that area, and if need be, I can
dump more dirt on the vine.

My plants are 30' long, all on the grass, and have now taken up more
than 1/3 of our yard. It is the best I have ever had, due mainly to
good warm weather, I think. My question is where is the best place to
water when growing on the lawn??? Only at the main root when growing
on the grass?? Would the plant pick up much water at these vines that
are covered in dirt on the grass?? What about fertilizing? Does the
fertilizer get put only at the main root or is it beneficial to put
it on the covered vines on the grass? I can't imagine that the roots
are very deep. Any ideas?
