dead end vines

OK folks, here's a stupid question(although a teacher of mine once told me
that the only stupid question is the one you never ask). Hubby is
determined that it's time to dead-end his vine. He's concerned the plant is
pumping to much energy into growing vines when it should be working on
growing the BIG ONE. The vines are30' long with fruit set about mid way.
Lots of healthy foliage, buried vines with vigorous root growth, but now,
what to do with the end of the vine when he cuts it. Do you bury it? or
will that provide a ready path for insects.
I personally thought he could just let the baby keep growing, but he is
sure the plant is long enough.
