Hi Jan,
Go ahead and get your shade up if you can. I try to get mine covered
when they are basketball size. Problem is I need more covers for all
the pumpkins I have set. I haven't had time to do much of that lateley,
I'm having trouble getting out to water as much as I need to. It's
tough when you can't grow at home and also have a long commute, work
long hours and want to spend some time with your children. I'm sorry to
say that lateley the pumkin patch has been getting the short end of it.
Continue to try to set more fruit if you can. Remove surplus fruit if
they have a poor positon on the vine or location in the garden.
Secondary vines should be cut when they get as long as you want them or
have room for. It is the tertiary vines that run off the secondaries
that get removed altogether. Also remove the secodaries that come off
the main vine right next to the fruit, it will just be in the way and
may damage your pumpkin. If you have need of any more male flowers help
yourself. I wouldn't try to grow more than one fruit per vine though.
You can remove unwanted females before they bloom that way the plant
won't be directing any energy into thier development and it can go into
your pumpkins instead.
Good Luck,
Chris Michalec
