Glenn,

It's hard to say what made the fruit split.  Most likely it's what Brock
mentioned a sudden uptake of water and nutrients.  Sounds like it might
be a fluke because the rest of the fruit on the same plant didn't break. 
If the plant was growing too fast all of the fruit would have split.  All
you can do is hope for the best and go easy on the fertilizer and water. 
Don't let your plant get too dry before your next watering cycle.  If
your patch is already too dry add small amounts of water over the next
couple of days. In the past I've had  plants blow everything up and never
got a pumpkin to set all year. So slow and steady and you should be ok.
