Well, in your case - with the secondary vines in bad shape - keeping the 
tertiaries is one idea - however - at this stage of the game - your pumpkin 
growth will be less vigorous - as well as the size factor (being smaller) by 
the time the tertiaries have a chance to grow up and produce 
fruit...............  6 in one hand - half dozen in the other
